It’s almost Memorial Day and summertime is upon us. There are so many things to do in proximity of Houston that I thought I’d try something new. Every month I want to send you an update on interesting things that might make a fun weekend break.
Check these out for June:
GRIMES COUNTY FAIR: May 27-June 10. Navasota event features a barbecue cook-off, creative arts contests and livestock events. Grimes County Expo Center, 5220 FM 3455, Navasota: 979-412-2133. www.grimescountyfair.com
TEXAS CITY FUNFEST: June 2-3. Expect arts and crafts, barbecue cook-off, children’s actiiies and live entertainment at the Mall of the Mainland. 409-935-1408: www.texascitychamber.com.
SE CARIBBEAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH FESTIVAL: June 3. Music, dance, customs and authentic foods are the focus of this downtown event at Jones Plaza. www.caribbeanheritagetx.org. Inner Loop.
AIA SAND CASTLE COMPETITION: June 3. Galveston’s East Beach opens to teams and sponsors at 6:30 a.m. for his fundraising competition. For audiences the beach opens at 9:00 a.m. Bring a picnic,watch the construction and see the Golden Bucket Awards. www.aiahouston.
HOUSTON EXOTIC AUTO FEST: June 4. Event at NRG Park showcases private exotic automobiles, select dealerships, a high-ed aftermarket and premier non-automotive luxury brands. houstonexoticautofestival.com INNER LOOP.
WINE AND FOOD WEEK: June 5-11. The Woodlands event features 500 wines, 50 restaurants, wine producers and culinary personalities. www.wineandfoodweek.com
WORLD OCEANS DAY FESTIVAL AND SEAWEED ART CONTEST: June 8. Activities educate about oceans and ecosystems and there’s a sargassum/marine debris art contest. Stewart Beach 201 Seawall, Galveston,: www.artistboat.org.
CZECH KOLACHE-KLOBASE FESTIVAL: June 10. East Bernard’s Riverside Hall will host polka dancing, arts and crafts, sausage and barbecue chicken. kiddie games, dancers and a cakewalk. 979-335-7907 www.kkfest.com.
